Understanding The Trade

Filed under: General — admin @ 1:23 pm

There can be a huge difference in prices of any new door, whether it is a wood, UPVC or composite door. However not all doors are made to the same specification and there can be a huge difference in price of similar looking doors that can be confusing to the consumer.

Just about everyone ion the trade will say their doors are the best and do the job designed and so you should buy form them. But just by taking a bit of time out and researching the added value of more expensive doors can in the long run save you money.

First of all, looks are important but not in a few years time when your UPVC door has lost colour, or when you wooden door has warped. Take UPVC doors for example; Some are just filled with a polystyrene filling that has little security features. They also can be prone to losing their colour after a few years where the weather has been variable, form sunlight to heavy rain.

Composite doors can be better, not only having stronger insides, including timber frames, the GRP skin can handle discolouring better than UPVC. Again not all composite doors are the same, so you should ensure you know the specification of each door, to know if you have bought quality or not so.

Wooden doors tend to easier to define their quality as you can see what you get. Here the fitting and treatment is essential by a tradesman to ensure the longevity of the door.

The price of doors often relates to the buying ability of the tradesman or retailer you are buying the door from. In better words a one man tradesman will probably not get the better trade price for the door he is buying than an online retailer like Global Door, who buy in bulk and benefit from cheaper cost prices that can be passed on to the consumer.

So to summarise, first realise the quality of the door you intend to buy and understand the specifications. Then shop around using the internet for prices, being especially awar that those who buy more doors from the manufacturers are more likely to offer cheaper prices to the consumer, for the same quality of door.

Getting Your Door Fitted

It may seem an obvious point but the quality of fitting will determine the lifetime and functionally of the door concerned. There is more to fitting a door that sticking few screws into the concrete on either side hoping the door will stay put forever.

Correct measurements fixing units and correct sealing properties should be used to ensure a weather proof seal. Ensuring the door is level, even if the ground is not is also and essential requirement, to a quality door fit.

Sometimes it may be a requirement to have framing or even panelling around or to the side of a new front door, as the hole to fit the door, could be mush bigger. In some cases addition panels can add a new dimension to the door and add another decorative level to the front of your house.

Fitting these filler panels requires as much care as the door itself, especially as it is likely that the door will either fit against or even be mounted on these panels, depending on which way the door opens.

Ensuring the door opens the correct way from either right to left or vice versa, is something to figure out before ordering your new door. Many composite and UPVC doors cannot be altered to suit different hanging sides. You either buy a right hand or left hand hanging door. Wooden doors may be different as you can add the hinges to either side of the wooden door.

It is no surprise that we will then recommend only a professional, to fit you new door, especially if the door and parts are of some value. Just stating a potential tradesman delivers quality work is not enough? You should ask for proof and ideally photographs of fitted doors so you can make an educated decision of who to employ to fit your new front door.
