New Door Prices

Filed under: General — admin @ 1:42 pm

When you visit your local DIY store you can often see why a particular door costs the price it does by comparing it with others with the ability to touch and fell the product and physically see the benefits an expensive composite door may offer. However this is not so easy when visiting websites. Of course the picture look good and of course they talk about the benefits, but it is not until identify the weaknesses of a particular door compare it with other can you tell if you are really getting a good deal or not.

A new website is about be launched called composite door prices, with the aim to compare doors and give real advice on why these composite doors costs what they do, or identify when maybe the deal is not so promising.  It then also becomes possible to compare other door types from a cost point of view rather than a decorative or security point of view.

It is early days and there is a lot of information to compile and then to add more price related information to the website. But the idea is good and if they can deliver it will be a good resource for composite door prices on the internet.

Think Security

Filed under: Fitting — admin @ 10:47 am

Of course the first thing you would consider with your new front door would be how it looks, its colour maybe the size and design of the glass, the door knobs and knockers and how it  will make the front of your home look. But there is a more serious consideration you should be considering with your next front door.

Security is something that should be in the mind of any buyer, first from the point of deterring any intruder into your home, and secondly how it may affect you insurance policy of claim. It is true that most thieves will probably look for an easier way into your home say a window or a door around the back away from the eyes of neighbours. But professional burglars now have sophisticated ways of entering homes quickly and easily and some are very cheeky, knowing that if any work was to occur around the front, most neighbours would not challenge assuming everything was above board.

However the stronger the door the more likely any thief will think twice, but it also sense a subliminal message that of a homeowner has consider string security at the front, their is a strong chance they will have also considered security around the back also and therefore they will move on to an easier challenge.

A consideration for the security of your home could be a composite door. In most cases theses doors are stronger and more secure that UPVC doors as they often have a solid wood frame or even inner. So all locks and door furniture are firmly fixed to the door, making it harder for tools to extract the lock or prize the door away from its frame. These doors are often not just connected to the frame via a lock at one point but at several, top bottom and middle, making the security often even better than a solid wood door. Of course different composite door manufacturers and trade suppliers offer different options and qualities to doors so this all should be investigated first.

The lock that is installed is also very important not at least for you insurance company. Many home insurance policies have minimum requirements when it comes to the locks used within your home and that applies to your front door as much as any other. As often when you buy a door, the company involved will sell you the add on lock, make sure you get the right door security for you and are not swayed by a quick sale or quick delivery and not having you front door fully secure and safe.

Bumper Bank Holiday

Filed under: General — admin @ 1:57 pm

As we know the time of year for DIY projects is upon us and this Bank Holiday was no exception. There might be a recession on at the moment, but that did not stop the queues at the local B&Q’s as the annual clean up or improve the home routine got into full force.

As the paint came out many had obviously decided they no longer wanted to paint that front door and a new composite option would probably be the solution. Many now use the internet to search for prices and hopefully compare quality also, to ensure they get the right deal.

Many online door suppliers came back from their weekend holiday to find answering machines and online orders stacked up, from consumers in the mood to commit to that front door purchase that has been on the back burner since last autumn. There are other reason too, with many committed to staying n their current home, not being able to trade up as the mortgage applications are still not up to pervious levels. It seems that stay where you are and make better with what you have got is the fashion for 2009.

Of course even if you did decide to move house, a new composite door would surely add value to it and if not at least help with the decision process. Often the front door of a home is the fuirst thing a potential buyer will see and as first impressions are ever lasting, it makes sense to give them a good one. So maybe there is more than one reason to buy a new composite door this spring.

Understanding The Trade

Filed under: General — admin @ 1:23 pm

There can be a huge difference in prices of any new door, whether it is a wood, UPVC or composite door. However not all doors are made to the same specification and there can be a huge difference in price of similar looking doors that can be confusing to the consumer.

Just about everyone ion the trade will say their doors are the best and do the job designed and so you should buy form them. But just by taking a bit of time out and researching the added value of more expensive doors can in the long run save you money.

First of all, looks are important but not in a few years time when your UPVC door has lost colour, or when you wooden door has warped. Take UPVC doors for example; Some are just filled with a polystyrene filling that has little security features. They also can be prone to losing their colour after a few years where the weather has been variable, form sunlight to heavy rain.

Composite doors can be better, not only having stronger insides, including timber frames, the GRP skin can handle discolouring better than UPVC. Again not all composite doors are the same, so you should ensure you know the specification of each door, to know if you have bought quality or not so.

Wooden doors tend to easier to define their quality as you can see what you get. Here the fitting and treatment is essential by a tradesman to ensure the longevity of the door.

The price of doors often relates to the buying ability of the tradesman or retailer you are buying the door from. In better words a one man tradesman will probably not get the better trade price for the door he is buying than an online retailer like Global Door, who buy in bulk and benefit from cheaper cost prices that can be passed on to the consumer.

So to summarise, first realise the quality of the door you intend to buy and understand the specifications. Then shop around using the internet for prices, being especially awar that those who buy more doors from the manufacturers are more likely to offer cheaper prices to the consumer, for the same quality of door.

Getting Your Door Fitted

Filed under: Fitting — admin @ 12:23 pm

It may seem an obvious point but the quality of fitting will determine the lifetime and functionally of the door concerned. There is more to fitting a door that sticking few screws into the concrete on either side hoping the door will stay put forever.

Correct measurements fixing units and correct sealing properties should be used to ensure a weather proof seal. Ensuring the door is level, even if the ground is not is also and essential requirement, to a quality door fit.

Sometimes it may be a requirement to have framing or even panelling around or to the side of a new front door, as the hole to fit the door, could be mush bigger. In some cases addition panels can add a new dimension to the door and add another decorative level to the front of your house.

Fitting these filler panels requires as much care as the door itself, especially as it is likely that the door will either fit against or even be mounted on these panels, depending on which way the door opens.

Ensuring the door opens the correct way from either right to left or vice versa, is something to figure out before ordering your new door. Many composite and UPVC doors cannot be altered to suit different hanging sides. You either buy a right hand or left hand hanging door. Wooden doors may be different as you can add the hinges to either side of the wooden door.

It is no surprise that we will then recommend only a professional, to fit you new door, especially if the door and parts are of some value. Just stating a potential tradesman delivers quality work is not enough? You should ask for proof and ideally photographs of fitted doors so you can make an educated decision of who to employ to fit your new front door.
